First Matches - Done

The Mavericks hit the road on 4th November and headed down the M4 to Bath for their first matches since their launch. An afternoon of friendlies against our friends at University of Bath and South West Hawks was the perfect way to spend a Saturday and we had a LOT of fun on court.

Highlights from Thames Mavericks Netball Club’s matches against South West Hawks and University of Bath on 4th November 2023.

The first match of the afternoon was Mavs versus the University of Bath and from the first whistle, it was clear that Mavs had put out a strong lineup for their debut game. With some exceptional through-court play, led by Georgina Robertson and Connor Sharod-Southam, Mavs hit the half-time break in the lead. Great shooting from Jacob Kirby and Lou Grainger had seen the Mavs scoreline tick upwards whilst in defence, Jessie Cherrill and Toby Garbett made life exceptionally difficult for the Bath shooters. In the second half, Kate Tremayne hit some excellent long-range goals and Charlotte Hopper’s work rate in the centre-court was faultless.

The second game saw Mavs take on South West Hawks and their experienced team. This was a great learning curve for Mavs and there were some fantastic passages of play and noteworthy performances. Toby Garbett switched from defence to the shooting circle and netted several goals for Mavs, receiving excellent passes from the Mavs attacking lineup. However, it was in the final quarter when Mavs really hit their stride, going goal-for-goal with SW Hawks with Jessie Cherrill and Tamryn Settle combining well in the defensive circle and the whole team coming together to finish on a high.

Mavs next take to court on 26th November with matches against Kraken Netball and West Cheshire Warriors.
